Have you ever used glitter? It gets everywhere! Weeks later, you’re still finding it all over the room where you used it, even after vacuuming three times. It gets on your skin, your clothes, your hair.
Glitter is messy.
Anger is also messy.
Just like glitter, anger can be hard to contain once it’s released. Plus, it can affect everyone nearby, much like how glitter seems to get everywhere and sticks to everything it touches. And just like glitter, anger and hate are easily spread and hard to clean up once released.
Anger gets stuck in your body and keeps the energy from flowing. It fogs up your brain because you’re so focused on being angry that you miss opportunities. You are so focused on your story and being angry, that you completely miss a potential job opportunity because you weren’t paying attention.
You eat, drink, drug, or shop to make yourself feel better and forget. If only for a few moments. You tell people you’re fine, but deep down you know you’re lying.
I’ve been there.
I spent years being angry. Years telling people my story. I was a survivor, I would say. I got through it I would proudly announce.
But did I really? I was still angry and reliving the memories every day. Sure, I spun the stories into funny ones, but the fact was that I was still telling them.
I decided to change my life when I finally admitted to myself that I was sick of my lonely life and wanted to change.
Forgiveness releases you from the chains of anger.
So how do you start?
Start with the easy ones. The person who cut you off on aisle 5 of the grocery store yesterday. The kid who stole your lunch in school. Easy ones. Work your way up to the hard ones.
As you go through the easy ones, you’ll start to feel better. The fog will clear. You will sleep better. You might even start to notice new opportunities!
And that dumpster fire you’ve been chained to for years?
Leave that one for last.
Once you’ve tackled the small ones, you’ll feel more equipped to handle the bigger ones. Each step helps you reclaim a bit of your peace. Before you know it, you’ll be living lighter, unburdened, and genuinely free.
