What Makes You Lose Track of Time?
When you hear the word zeal, what do you think of?
I used to think it meant endless energy, nonstop enthusiasm, and enough caffeine to keep a small army awake.
Then I spent an afternoon at my desk with a cup of tea and completely lost track of time.
I read a friend’s book, designed a back cover, updated a website, created a social media graphic, and answered a stack of emails. Hours went by before I even noticed.
That’s when I realized something.
Maybe zeal isn’t about running around with your hair on fire. Maybe it’s about becoming so absorbed in something you enjoy that time quietly disappears.
We often think passion has to be loud and dramatic. We imagine it as a grand purpose or life-changing event. But sometimes it shows up in much quieter ways.
Sometimes it’s the thing you keep returning to.
Sometimes it’s the activity that energizes you instead of draining you.
Sometimes it’s the reason an afternoon disappears without you noticing.
When we follow what genuinely sparks our interest, we bring a different energy into the world. We become more creative, more present, and often more productive without even trying.
The challenge is that many of us spend so much time focused on what we should do that we stop paying attention to what naturally lights us up.
What if zeal is simply a clue?
What if the things that naturally draw your attention are pointing you toward something important?
This month, I invite you to notice what sparks your interest. What makes you lose track of time? What activities leave you feeling energized instead of drained?
The answers may reveal more than you think.
And if you find yourself completely absorbed in something you love, don’t be too quick to dismiss it.
That just might be zeal.
If you like what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like work.
It feels like an afternoon that disappeared before you noticed.
Until next time,
Katharine
