I get asked all the time, what are the ways I can stay safe when I am with a new client? Although this question is usually from women, my tips apply to men as well. Stay safe everyone!
- Make sure someone knows where you are going and what time you will be back. Text your location to partner, friend or family member.
- Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention. Don’t get distracted in a conversation with a friend on the phone while you are in someone’s home. Try to make sure they walk ahead of you.
- Always carry your phone. With new clients, have it in your hand open and ready to make a call or if you are in their apartment.
- If it “feels” wrong, trust that instinct. Always. Doesn’t matter if they look like a great person. Trust your intuition 100%.
- Many women have pepper spray on them, just in case. Although I know women who don’t as well.
- Verify your client’s identity. I know many people who run a background check on their new client.
- Many people who run errands, especially concierge, will not go into the client’s home, and will deliver to their door.
- Be aware of what you are wearing. Expensive jewelry and watches might make you a target.
- Be aware of comments made even if the client has been with you for a certain amount of time. You may get hints of a change in them and their personality.
- If it is the first meeting, do not get cornered in a room. To be safe, try to stay in a location with access to the door so that you can leave if you feel uncomfortable. This is for both male and female clients.
Until next time!
